How To Seem Smarter Than You Are

Mar 11, 2012 by

We all would love to seem smarter than we are around our peers or the contacts we interact with. However, it appears we are not be aware of the various ways of how to develop our self intelligence, or just learning how to seem smarter than you are. Fortunately, there are some outstanding ways you can apply to make yourself seem smarter than you are. What makes this even better is that it requires you to use only little effort to make it happen. Below is a list of ten awesome tips on how to seem smarter than you are.

10. Get a topic to deflate

Most of the “hot topics” are argued by people who have very little knowledge of the subject matter. A good instance is global warming – many people you talk to on this topic will advise you how we must change our habits in order to reduce harmful emissions into the environment, but who is willing to explain to you what “anthropogenic global warming” is. I am sure very few.  Take your time and listen to what the experts have to say on these issues, and, you will learn so many things on how to seem smarter than you are. Memorize some of the experts and quote them.

9. Indistinct Knowledge

If you develop your knowledge around an indistinct field, it is quite hard to come across someone who has knowledge in that field. This means that you can talk to any persons for hours without minding how many mistakes you make – because no one will really know. This makes you look super smart, and would be amazed at how you seem smarter than you are. You can start with early Christian writers, the early Egyptian dynasties, Saint Igantius of Antioch, Irenaeus, Novatian, Origen among others. Such areas would make you stand great arguments.

8. Enrich Your Vocabulary

We all know the power of vocabulary and we are aware of how they can make you seem smarter than you are. The easiest way of going about this is by learning a new word every day. Make sure that you get the meaning and the pronunciation right. You could start with a word like “mesothelium”, or any other odd word. At this point you are actually learning how to seem smarter than you are.

7. General Knowledge

All smart people are good at general knowledge and so should you, who would like to know how to seem smarter than you are. Get a Trivial Persuit (the Genius Version) and learn a new thing each evening before retiring to bed. It will not take long before you become a fountain of flowing knowledge. This will definitely make you seem smarter than you are.

6. Pose Questions

This is a great trick that I have seen work over and over again, for me and others as well. It works best when you ask questions on what you already know. Sounds like an irony but here’s a right way of applying it. When your first question is answered, pose a related question that indicates that you have taken in the first response, and would like a clarification of an aspect in the topic. In addition to this, if you are in a discussion with somebody who knows less of the topic compared to you; pose a question that would make them stumble.  This is more awesome if you have a crowd since all will be astonished by you. Please, try and humble yourself when his/her weakness shows. Develop this trait as you learn how to seem smarter than you are. This way, you seem smarter than you are.

5. Study Good Books

Get a wider overview of the famous classic novels. It is not necessary to read the whole book, just learn enough about it and you will know about it. If you are aware of many books you will actually seem smarter than you are. You can use the short notes on these books on sparknotes. They might trigger your quest to read a whole book to gain some intelligence.

4.Watch Movies

Watch movies that are both good and bad. The movies should be just good movies, fulfilling movies. If you could spout off a handful of good movies, you would either appear smart or fake. However, if you could categorize both good and bad movies, and justify your classification, you will sound smarter than you are.

3. Know Quotes

People respect references and they are in utterly awe if you incorporate a quote from a famous play, poetry or a witty remark by a literary master. There are numerous websites on the internet, which can help you start you off. I am working on a comprehensive page on authentic quotes for this site. You can check in later for our picks and analysis of the quotes. You can start off with famous people who are known, but not commonly quoted, for instance Ginsberg, Plath.

2. Utilize Words you know

There is nothing more idiotic than fumbling words. You seem smarter than you are when you use words that you know. There are debates that books can help you learn new words. However, you risk an awful mistake. If you learn new words it will broaden your thinking and enrich your capability to communicate.  However, that can pave way to seeming stupid. Therefore, you ought to clinch on words that you are 100% certain of their meaning and pronunciation. This is a great tip in learning how to seem smarter than you are.

1. Be Silent

The less you utter the less chances you have of being wrong. Oh, just remembered, smile and nod knowingly.
